Are we saying goodbye to trees?

A lot of times forests have been torn down to put a freeway down or build houses. There are many different forms of deforestation that some people might not know of or don’t realize the harm it does to the world. Nowadays there are many different ways to plant trees again. There are search bars where every search you do is one tree that gets planted. But also other initiatives like donations you can do or places where you yourself can plant trees to eventually create some kind of forest. But why is deforestation a thing, what are the different forms and why is it bad?

Deforestation

Deforestation is the process of taking down forests to create space for houses or a freeway for example. The main causes of deforestation are climate change, infrastructure, industrial agriculture, mining and timber logging. Climate change is the leading cause because of wildfires and droughts. Mining is because of the increasing demand for minerals. Timber logging is because of the wooden products we all use. Infrastructure is because of the population growth which leads to a need for cities and more housing. And industrial agriculture is because of meat production, soy and palm oil plantations.

These days companies in general try to make everything they produce and sell more sustainable. The reason they do this is because of the climate changes that have been going on for way too long, and are slowly becoming worse and worse. There are a lot of different things going on to try and switch this up, and go against climate change. Some of these are more for the animals, things for animals are cleaning out the ocean, no longer testing on animals, slaughtering less animals for food and such. But also the use of less plastic and more sustainable and biodegradable products is becoming more and more. What are some things that have changed in the past few years?

Supermarkets

When you look at the way supermarkets have been trying to change the packaging and waste of products, you might not notice a lot of change. The changes are slowly slowly working their way into the aisles. Coloured plastic has mostly been changed to regular see through plastic which is more useful in the recycle process. Some things are now packed in carton or recyclable materials, and we can now turn in small plastic bottles as well to get back the small deposit we do when we buy them. These are such great ways to take care of the problem, let’s hope it’ll only progress more and more over the next few years!

14 dead in New York region amid ‘historic’ flooding caused by Ida remnants | New York

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued its first ever flash flood emergency warning for New York City, as the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought heavy rain that flooded subway lines and streets in Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey.

At least 14 people have been killed in the flooding in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania as basement apartments suddenly filled with water.

A New York City police spokesperson said a total of eight people died when they became trapped in flooded basements. Five people were found dead in an apartment complex in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the city’s mayor and spokesperson told local media.

Another death was reported in in New Jersey in the city of Passaic. The city’s mayor, Hector Lora, said a 70-year-old man was swept away. “His family was rescued, they were all in the same car. Unfortunately, the car was overtaken by the waters, and the firefighters who were being dragged down under the vehicle were unable to get him out,” Lora told WCBS-TV.

Officials outside of Philadelphia reported “multiple fatalities”, saying no additional details were immediately available.

The deaths in New York included a 50-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman and a two-year-old boy who were found unconscious and unresponsive late Wednesday inside a home. They were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
