New Mexico state Dem leader resigns amid racketeering, income-laundering probe

New Mexico Household Majority Chief Sheryl Williams Stapleton resigned Friday amid a prison investigation involving alleged racketeering and funds laundering. 

The Democratic point out lawmaker has “unequivocally” denied the allegations but wrote in a letter to New Mexico’s secretary of condition that she felt her resignation was in the state’s most effective interest, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican.

Her choice was supported by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democratic leaders in the Statehouse.
