Increase of Extreme Weather Due to Global Warming

Global warming is one of the most dangerous challenges that all of humanity has ever faced. Its multiple effects will cause disruptions in everything from natural habitat to drinking water and food supply. And even more dangerously, it will give birth to some of the most powerful natural disasters ever known to mankind.

In 2004, the Tsunami in Asia displayed an unforgiving act of nature. Less than a year later, across continents in the United States, Hurricane Katrina delivered a blow of equal magnitude. Both the disasters caused massive humanitarian crisis, effecting hundreds of thousands of lives. These might not have been directly caused by global warming, but it certainly paints a picture of thing to come.

In India, the speed of cyclones in the Andra Pradesh region has jumped from an average of 150 kilometres per hours to 250 kph within just six years! And while some cities are at a risk of being washed out, other are at the risk of drying up.

Global warming will cause parts of the world to be very fertile for a period of time but simultaneously, it will also cause droughts in other parts. Scientists have estimated that as much as half a million people in Asia could face starvation within the next 30-40 years at this rate.

But it’s not just these devastating disasters that hint towards what’s happening with our weather. Summers are becoming hotter by the year, and this winter Ski resorts in Central America, Europe and the United … Continue Reading ...

A Brief History of Television Advertising

It All Began With Radio

Broadcasting was originally developed as a means for companies to sell radios. But once commercial entities realized that many households were listening to their radios a significant amount of time every day, they started to explore this medium as a way to get their message across to the masses. If one has to choose a single event that began the era of radio broadcasting, it would probably be the radio program broadcast by station WEAF in New York City on August 28, 1922 This was a ten-minute advertisement for suburban apartment housing. By Christmas of that year, several major New York department stores joined the fray and were running advertisements for their stores.

By the late 20’s radio advertising had advanced in a dramatic way. It was now dominated by advertising agencies who took control of the schedules by buying the available air time and selling it to their customers. They also handled the creative aspects of the commercials and programs and in fact even created entire series that were designed to sell one product or another. These efforts paved the way for the genesis of television advertising that would begin in a few more decades.

The Era of the Single Sponsor

Full time telecasting didn’t really take hold until 1948 as it took that long for the United States to recover from the Depression and World War II. At that time, the number of television sets reached the critical mass necessary to be considered … Continue Reading ...

Jamaica’s Weather is One of the Best Climates in the World

One of the greatest aspects of traveling to Jamaica for a holiday is its year round perfection in weather. Even during the Gulf hurricane season, Jamaica very seldom gets touched by a nasty storm and when it does rain, it is only for a little while before the skies clear up again and the sun shines down.

With an average yearly temperature along its coastlines averaging between 80 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit that drops as cool as 65 degree up top of the Blue Mountains, there is not a single day of the year that you could not wake up and wear a t-shirt and shorts all day.

On an average, the whole of Jamaica will see bout 78 inches of rain every year, but that is an average as the Blue Mountains can get in some cases over 300 inches while other parts of this small island nation may get less than 36 inches a year.

With warm temperatures year round and the rarity of the island seeing the effects of a hurricane, Jamaica is considered to be a great place to visit no matter what time of year it is. If it does get too hot for you while you are visiting Jamaica, you can always make your way up past the Blue Mountain Coffee farms all the way to the peak of the Blue Mountains where at an altitude of just over 7,400 feet, if the day is clear enough you can see all the way to … Continue Reading ...

The Classic Volkswagen Kombi – Does It Still Make A Practical Daily Driver?

The air-cooled Volkswagen Kombi is a motoring icon. It’s a classic van that is chock full of character, and a lot of young guys (and girls) still aspire to own one as their daily driver. But are they getting a bit long in the tooth now to make a practical vehicle for daily use?

I drive my 1976 2 liter bay window every day, and my experience gives a good indication of what you may have to do to make your unrestored Kombi safe and comfortable to drive as your main car.

Volkswagen Kombis are well over 30 years old now and it shows. I’ve spent a lot of time and money over the last few years getting mine back to a reasonable condition, and if you buy a cheap Kombi you have to be prepared to do the same. Even a more expensive Kombi will most likely need some repairs and TLC.

The 1800cc and 2 liter models are the most practical because they have more get up and go than the models with smaller engines, though it does cost more to rebuild the engines.

First the upside.

Kombis are cool, they’re iconic, they have character and they are definitely not boring.

They are fun to drive and when they are in good nick they are comfortable and handle well with good steering. The later model bay windows keep up with the traffic fine and can cruise on 60 mph all day, though they do slow down on bigger … Continue Reading ...
